We’re open all afternoon Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the foreseeable future (summer). So 12 noon to midnight Friday & Saturday and until 11pm on Sunday as it’s a school night.

Live bands coming up on Saturday nights includes The Lloyd Watson band, Sellout and Golden Dawn Trio.

Our Facebook page is a good place for news updates. Tonight (Sunday 12th) is quiz night, and every other Sunday night.

Coming up at the end of July is 2 day music and beer festival Woofstock 2011. More on this later.

Extended opening this weekend

So, apparently there’s a wedding on or something so The Angel Inn will be open noon ’til midnight Friday, Saturday & Sunday !

Friday night we have a new band on – “The Doghouse” – and on Saturday it’s the legendary Lloyd Watson Band. Music generally kicks off around 9pm.

With Adam sweltering in the kitchen you can choose from our extensive bar snacks menu from noon through 9pm, now including puddings.

Sunday night is quiz night, £1 per person entry and winning team takes the pot. Monday we’re off and closed all day.

We’ve had a complaint to the local council about noise from the pub. Not specifically about Woofstock – our recent two day blowout music and beer festival in aid of retired greyhounds, but it didn’t help !

Yarwell has less than 150 houses and many larger villages can’t sustain a village pub, so we have to do our best to do things well and do what people want. The bands bring in regular users from surrounding villages and are an important part of keeping the pub afloat.

We are of course operating entirely within our license and could in fact put a band on every night of the week !

Tonights band is Animals Hellwing from Stamford. Next week is Di’s birthday and will feature The Glambassadors a 70s glam rock tribute band. Fancy dress welcome and encouraged. See our Facebook page for upcoming events.

Food !

The Angel is adding food to complement the excellent beverages on offer. This doesn’t mean “gastro pub”, as that market is well served locally already. The idea is for reasonably priced food to accompany your drinking and entertainment, not a sit down “formal” meal. This should also appeal to locals that forgot to go shopping, busy people, walkers, caravan site transients etc.

There are vegetarian options and a willingness to meet your personal preferences where possible, the menu is shown below but may not be that readable – so you’ll have to come and look at the real thing in the flesh ! Prices typically £5.50 for main courses, sandwiches £2.

Eating hours: 12-2.30 lunchtimes, 7-9.30pm Tues-Thursday evening, 5-9pm Friday and Saturday (note opening now 2 hours earlier Fri/Sat) and 7-9pm Sunday evening. Closed Monday.

Potato Chips and Poker Chips

The dark nights and miserable weather are here and the Angel has started experimenting with poker to provide some light hearted entertainment and maybe a chance to win a few quid.

We’re playing Texas Hold-em no limits poker, where you get dealt 2 cards and there are 5 on the table with the best hand of 5 made up from the two sources. The same game as Zynga poker at http://www.zynga.com/ and via Facebook. Beginners are welcome, if we’re playing for money it’s £5 or less to play and the winner takes all. Alternate Thursday evenings (next one 10th December) and alternate Sundays (when there isn’t a quiz) so next one 6th December. Sign up by 8.30 pm, game ends 11.30 pm if still in play.

The chip fryer is now up and running, adding a bowl / mug of chips to the menu of drinker’s food. No set tables and hushed conversation at the Angel, a burger and chips accompanied by a pint of ale with the music up loud is more our style. Come and try it.

Nick’s CD

The Angel’s landlord Nick Lander with his band The Supercalas have released their debut studio CD “Life In A Middle England Town”. Available for a tenner or less in the Angel, depending on your haggling skills, or on Ebay for £10 inc p&p.

This weekend Saturday 12th is Liz and Martin’s wedding evening reception in the pub.

Two Bands, A Quiz, A Birthday and Facebook

As the nights draw in (seemed to be dark at 8.30 last night) the Angel has not one but two bands coming up – Monkey Boy on Friday night and The Goodges on Saturday night (4th / 5th September). Both will kick off around 9pm and be out in the garden weather permitting.

Friday night is Di’s birthday, 21 again, so come along to celebrate – she’ll be on the customer side of the bar for a change.

Quiz night again on Sunday 6th September, 9pm start, £1 per person to enter in teams up to 6, winning team takes all the cash.

The Angel now has a group on Facebook where you can join up to keep in touch with events and fellow customers.

Finally there’s a Youtube channel for Woofstock ’09 where you can see the bands you missed, including the two that are playing the Angel Inn again this week.

Don’t forget our mini music festival with bands on in the garden “out the back” from noon to 11pm. www.woofstock.co.uk for more details. Bring the kids (under supervision) and a picnic or indulge in our Barbecue. Free entry, donations to Greyhound Trust. As well as the new swish Weston’s Cider Ice on tap we’ll have three guest ales in addition to our resident Hophead from Brewster’s.

Saturday night August 1st is Karaoke, a week on Saturday we have a new band playing - Lime Shark – who recently played live on BBC Radio.

Pub quiz will be back on Sunday 9th August at 9pm.

It’s the Summer !

The Angel is getting a new product to keep you cool as the sun beats down – Cider Ice ! This is draught Weston’s cider pulled through a special chiller that tops off the glass with frozen cider – so you get the chill without the dilution of adding ice – Cool ! Installation scheduled for today 24th July 2009.

We’ve got loads of live bands lined up, practically one every Saturday night from now to November. Next up is Frankly My Dear who describe themselves as “laid back hippy/blues/rock” - this Saturday, 25th July, set starts around 9pm but be there earlier to get a good spot.

Next weekend is “Woofstock” our all day music festival in aid of retired greyhounds. Running from noon to midnight we’ll have several bands including village locals The Offlight performing out the back in the garden. There’ll be a barbecue and obviously plenty to drink, including Cider Ice.

Saturday May 30th sees the return to the Angel of Johnny Dee, Guardian contributor , Radio Cambridgeshire presenter and all round entertainer. This will be his second visit and last time was an absolute hoot, so come on down.

The sun has put in an appearance recently, as can be seen from Dan’s peeling face and panda eyes, so the Angel beer garden is back in service for you to enjoy the warmth along with your favourite tipple.

There’s live music most Saturday nights, except for June 6th, interspersed with Karaoke. The next band I can remember is Lloyd Watson on July 4th – Independence Day – so I ought to take notes and put up a full list.

If you want to trundle down on your electric scooter for a quite drink then Thursday night is Tumbleweed night, usually hosted by the delectable Liz. See you there !
